Ernest Scared Stupid (1991) - Know What I Mean, Vern?

Oh, darling. You thought we were done with October? Please. The night is young, and so is the target demographic.

Ernest Scared Stupid is what happens when you give Jim Varney a Halloween budget and absolutely zero supervision. Ernest P. Worrell, sanitation worker and professional mistake-maker, manages to release an ancient troll named Trantor from beneath an oak tree. The troll then proceeds to turn local children into wooden dolls because apparently that is how trolls snack. Ernest, being Ernest, tries to fix everything and makes it approximately 400% worse before it gets better.

This is the fifth Ernest film and the last one Touchstone Pictures would touch with a ten-foot pole. After this, the series went direct-to-video, which should tell you everything about how the next few years went for our boy Vern. But you know what? This one has Eartha Kitt as a crazy old lady who knows about curses, and that alone is worth the price of admission.

🥛 The troll's weakness involves both dairy products and the power of unconditional love. I am not joking. Milk plays a surprisingly important role in the climax.

👵 Eartha Kitt plays Old Lady Hackmore, because of course Eartha Kitt would be in an Ernest movie. Purrfect casting.

🧸 Trantor transforms children into wooden dolls to feast on their energy. It is like Pinocchio if Pinocchio were deeply unwell.

💰 The film had a $9.6 million budget and grossed $14.1 million. Not quite Disney blockbuster numbers, but Ernest never aimed for that.

🎬 The film was briefly announced as "Ernest Scared Stiff" before settling on the much more dignified "Ernest Scared Stupid."

For the Young and the Young at Heart

Look, I am not going to pretend this is high art. It is an Ernest movie. The effects are rubbery, the plot makes questionable choices, and at one point Ernest kisses a troll. But there is something genuinely charming about watching Jim Varney commit to absolute nonsense with the energy of a man who genuinely believes every single thing he is doing.

This is the perfect early-evening screening for families, for the Ernest-curious, and for anyone who wants to remember what it felt like to rent a VHS tape with a weirdly specific holiday theme. Bring the kids. They will either love it or be deeply confused. Either way, you are making memories.
